Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to the Game
The seasonal content update for the block-building phenomenon has landed — and it features the initial fresh armament introduced into the game since the mace made its debut. The lance is finally here and it might just change how you play Minecraft, particularly when you enjoy mayhem.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mayhem Mounts drop also adds several new features and enhancements focused on animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the creators had already known it was time for a fresh combat tool.
"We knew initially that we wanted a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we wanted it to be fighting from atop a creature," stated a senior product manager. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both handled superbly when we tested our prototypes and also looked good for the use case."
If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can charge at your friends on horseback, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move excellently designed for it.
"[Jousting on horses is a major functions for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the developer continues. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the jab attack, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and inflict increased harm [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] perfect for mounted duels."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The unruly pleasure isn't limited to there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] perfect for equipping the elytra and flying forth and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she suggests.
In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now a reality, and it should be made an competitive event immediately.
Another key feature in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is modeled after the nautilus shells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it carry you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also preserve your breath meter, so there's no need to surface for fresh air.
The rest of the additions are mostly things that want to kill you, as is the way of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, frequently with a Drowned on its back. If you succeed in defeat the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus — or the standard version, for that matter — with a spiky fish.
"We've been thinking about this challenge periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to also unveil something for aquatic environments," the developer clarifies. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a few different ideas for underwater mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked striking, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."
She also adds that there are actually a pair of variants of undead nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you encounter underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Further inclusions include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive skeletons that can withstand the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you end up in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an notable look that sees their bones protruding. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a analogous exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be found at night with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some highly requested changes to riding horses. Now, you can cross rivers and lakes while mounted on a horse. Additionally, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the ultimate protection it deserves.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
In summary, the final game drop of the year is a solid offering. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have felt like a significant enhancement. Throw in the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is live for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
