A man, subsequently taken into custody for allegedly striking police officers with a food item, communicates with immigration and FBI agents.

A US immigration agent has testified he could sense through his body armor the impact of a deli item thrown at him by a Washington DC protester, who has gone on trial for physical attack.

Customs and Border Patrol agent the government official informed the jury the food item "burst all over him" and he "detected the vegetables and yellow sauce" on his official attire.

Neither side disputes that Sean Dunn, in his thirties, did in fact throw vulgar language and a deli-style sandwich at officers assigned by the former president to secure the nation's capital in late summer.

The incident was filmed on recording and became popular online, making the accused a figure of opposition in the federal district to the former president.

State lawyers originally tried to obtain major offense allegations against Mr Dunn, but a legal panel declined to indict him.

The administration's deployment of National Guard troops to the federal district this summer caused protest from some of the DC citizens, who considered it a politicisation of the armed forces.

According to legal filings, Mr Dunn came near a police contingent at about 23:00 on the summer date, describing them "authoritarians" and exclaiming: "Why are you here? I don't want you in my city!"

The court witnessed a reenactment from the agent on the court date as he gave evidence against Mr Dunn.

"I detected it through my body armor," he stated of the sandwich's impact, mentioning that an onion string remained from his police radio and mustard discolored his shirt.

Mr Dunn's lawyer, his legal representative, argued in her court presentation that launching the food item was a "non-threatening act that did not, could not, result in harm".

But prosecutor the prosecutor maintained the accused must be facing consequences.

"No matter who you are, you can't just go around throwing stuff at individuals because you're upset," the prosecutor declared.

Subsequent to the reported incident came to light, Mr Dunn was dismissed from his employment as a legal assistant in the federal legal agency.
