United Nations Lifts Sanctions on Syria's Leader Before Presidential Visit
The UN Security Council approved to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his White House visit next week.
He was appointed interim leader subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that removed Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, ending thirteen long years of civil war.
Washington's ambassador Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.
Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions as the leader of the religious organization the HTS movement, which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities this past July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of these restrictions, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and allied countries for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."
Upcoming White House Meeting
Sharaa's White House visit this coming Monday occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.
The two leaders convened on their first occasion in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through Arab nations.
After that meeting, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".
The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria before he cut connections during 2016.
Prior United States Journey
This week's diplomatic engagement will not be his initial visit to America during this period. This past fall, he emerged as the initial Syrian president to present to the global assembly in New York after approximately sixty years.
During his address, he said Syria was "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
