Unusual Scarlet Lightning Photographed in Skies

A group of photographers based in the island nation have managed to photograph visual evidence of crimson flashes, among the least common celestial events in the world, in which bright red bursts become visible in the sky.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

This group of artists had originally set out to capture the galactic core over the unique geological structures in the lower part of the country on a specific autumn evening, when they chanced upon the extraordinary event.

They thought they would be fortunate to get clear skies that night, but their expedition transformed into “a truly memorable experience,” an individual involved stated.

Upon examining his photographs for a galaxy composite and realized he had recorded red sprites,” the photographer said. “We just could not believe it – we experienced joyful noises and numerous expressions in the darkness.”

Understanding Red Sprites

Red sprites are bursts of electrical energy in the upper atmosphere, generated by storm systems. In contrast to lightning that strikes downward to the earth, red sprites shoot upwards towards the upper atmosphere, creating structures that are similar to pillars, carrots or even bell-shaped organisms. The earliest recorded picture of a such an event was captured – by chance – in 1989, by a group at the University of Minnesota.

Momentary and Ethereal Sightings

The phenomena last for such a short time – persisting for a mere instant – that they are seldom seen to the unaided vision, but one photographer was fortunate. “I happened to be looking straight toward a sprite when it occurred – just a perfect coincidence viewing the right part of the sky and I saw a brief red flash,” he commented.

Witnessing the occurrences was a goal for this individual, an award-winning nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you witness something that is not real, it appears mystical … it’s this very deep red colour that is visible for an instant, so it is captivating to witness.”

Advanced and Artistic Mastery

Photographing a this phenomenon needs a mastery of technical photography, as well as an knowledge about atmospheric physics and innovative thinking, he stated. “It’s a really involved category of art that’s extremely satisfying as well.”

One of the other individuals said it was counted as the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his life. “I witnessed the galactic band illuminating above the distant edge while these giant scarlet filaments of light moved above a thunderstorm at a great distance,” he explained.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no additional photographs depicting crimson flashes and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in a single image.

“It represented a unique instance when you realize you are observing a phenomenon you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
